Japanese MEXT Research Scholarships for the class of 2024-2025 batch applications are open for international students for Masters’s and Ph.D. programs. MEXT is one of the best-known Japanese scholarships for students who are up for research work and are self-motivated.
About 140,000 international students from more than 170 countries and regions of the world are studying at higher educational institutions in Japan. These students can broaden their horizons through exposure to Japanese as well as the diverse cultures of the world. Japan is a tolerant country where freedom of religion and thought is guaranteed by the constitution.
Recruitment for those arriving in Japan in April 2024 or September/October 2024 is made between April and June of the previous year. The first screening is conducted between May and July by the Japanese Embassies or Consulates General.
As the application process and specific schedule differ according to the country of your nationality, please inquire the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your country for details. DO NOT send any application documents directly to MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) in Japan.

Eligibility Criteria to Apply for MEXT Research Scholarships:
- Must have an undergraduate degree for the Master’s program.
- For research students, a candidate must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates. Or must have completed 16 years of education.
- Must be enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program in Japan.
- Must be an international citizen.
Documents Required for MEXT Research Scholarships
The following documents (in the given order) should be submitted before the deadline:
- Mark Sheet Form
- Application form (1 original, 1 copy)
- Research proposal for doctoral degree candidates
- Recommendation Letter from the president/dean or the academic advisor at the current or last university attended. (1 original, 1 copy)
- Health Certificate (1 original, 1 copy)
- Abstract of theses (if applicable) (1 original, 1 copy)
- Recommendation letter from the present employer (if applicable) (1 original, 1 copy)
Attested copies of transcripts for all universities attended. (1 copy with original attestation, 1 copy). Applicants must submit the following documents according to applicant’s academic background:
- Applicants who have already graduated from a university’s undergraduate program: an academic transcript of the program
- Applicants who have already completed a degree program at a graduate school: academic transcripts of both the undergraduate and the graduate programs
- Applicants who are pursuing an undergraduate degree: an academic transcript that covers from the year of enrollment to the term for which grades have been determined at the time of application for the scholarship
- Applicants who are pursuing a graduate school degree: an academic transcript of the undergraduate program and an academic transcript of the degree program at the graduate school that covers from the year of enrollment to the term for which grades have been determined at the time of application for the scholarship.
Attested copy of the certification of graduation or degree certificate of university attended. (1 copy with original attestation, 1 copy). Applicants must submit the following documents according to applicant’s academic background:
- Applicants who have already graduated from a university’s undergraduate program: a certificate of graduation from the undergraduate program
- Applicants who have already completed a graduate school degree: certificates of graduation from both the undergraduate and graduate programs
- Applicants who are pursuing an undergraduate degree: a certificate of prospective graduation from the undergraduate program
- Applicants who are pursuing a graduate degree: a certificate of graduation from the undergraduate program and a certificate of prospective graduation from the degree program at the graduate school.
Application Process to Apply for MEXT Research Scholarships:
- The candidate must fill out the application form online.
- All the required documents must be attached with the application form.
- The application should be printed on A4 size paper.
- Certificates & documents, other than those mentioned above, will not be considered.
- The embassy will only contact the shortlisted applicants by August 2024.
